Mathematics

At Lilydale Primary School, Mathematics is taught through the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0), with a strong focus on building confident, capable, and curious learners from Foundation to Grade 6. Students develop their understanding through explicit teaching, hands-on learning experiences, problem solving, reasoning, and meaningful real-world connections. Our Mathematics program supports students to build strong foundations in:

  • Number

  • Algebra,

  • Measurement,

  • Geometry,

  • Statistics

  • Probability

Teachers use assessment and differentiated instruction to ensure all students are supported and challenged at their point of need. Learning intentions and success criteria are made clear so students understand their goals and can reflect on their progress. Through collaborative learning, targeted practice, and rich mathematical tasks, students are encouraged to think critically, explain their reasoning, and apply their knowledge confidently across a range of contexts. We want students to see mathematics as meaningful, achievable and engaging, and to feel confident using their skills to understand the world around them.

Our Mathematics Program is design to cover the 4 Key Proficiencies:

  • 1. Understanding: This relates to students making connections between related concepts and progressively apply the familiar to develop new ideas. They develop an understanding of the relationship between the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of mathematics.

  • 2. Fluency: This relates to students developing skills in choosing appropriate procedures, carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately, and recalling factual knowledge and concepts readily.

  • 3. Problem Solving: This relates to the ability of students to make choices, interpret, formulate, model and investigate problem situations, select and use technological functions and communicate solutions effectively.

  • 4. Reasoning: This relates to students developing an increasingly sophisticated capacity for logical, statistical and probabilistic thinking and actions, such as hypothesising, analysing, proving, evaluating, explaining, inferring, justifying and generalising.
